He holds the European Board Exam in Orthopaedic Surgery and specialized in knee surgery at the University of Liverpool Hospital. Formerly a Consultant at Bradford Teaching Hospital and Shaukat Khanum Hospital, Dr. Shoaib is an Executive Board Member of the Pakistan Arthroplasty Society and a member of the British Orthopedic Association. How long do I need walking aids?

The time that you may need a walking aid after total joint replacement is variable. In general, if your surgeon allows you to place as much weight as tolerated on your total joint replacement. Most patients use a walker for approximately 3-4 weeks and then a cane for another 2-4 weeks. You should use a walking aid until you feel comfortable and safe walking without one. Your physiotherapist will help you through this transition.

How long will it take to maximize my range of motion?

It is essential to work hard on your range of motion after surgery. For some, it can take up to three months to maximize your motion. The amount of motion you get after knee replacement depends on how much motion you had prior to surgery.

Will I need to use walking aids after hip replacement surgery?

Initially, you may need to use a walker, crutches, or a cane to assist with walking while your hip heals. As you regain strength and mobility, you may gradually transition to walking without aids, but this varies from person to person.

What are the three rules after hip replacement?

The surgeon will advise you on specific movements and positions to prevent hip dislocation.

  • Avoid bending at the waist beyond 90°.
  • Refrain from crossing your legs.
  • Minimize twisting of your legs or excessive inward/outward turning of your feet.

When can I go back to work?

This depends on your profession. Typically, if your work is sedentary, you may return when you are comfortable. If your job is more rigorous, you may need up to 3 months before you can return to full duty. In some cases, more or less time is necessary.

Can you get both hips replaced at the same time?

Are there any possible complications after hip replacement surgery?

While hip replacement surgery is generally safe, like any surgical procedure, it carries certain complications, including infection, blood clots, injury to blood vessels or nerves, dislocation of the hip joint, and change in leg length.

Will my hip implant set off the airport metal detector?
